The Nesbitt House was originally built by Sir
Alexander Nesbett and located at Dean Hall Plantation in the 1800's. After Nesbett's death, an overseer and one of the best rice planters, William A. Carson, acquired Dean Hall and made the Nesbett house his primary residence. Dean Hall was purchased in 1909 by Benjamin Kittredge of New York, who also developed Cypress Gardens. After Kittredge's death in 1951, the Cooper River Industrial Park Co. bought the house in 1957 along with 1,325 acres.
Later, E.I du Pont De Nemours & Co. purchased 2,000 acres on the Cooper River including the plantation house. But it was a transaction between Cmdr. Charles C. Baggs and DuPont in which Baggs bought the house and had it moved from Berkeley County to be re-erected on his farm in Beaufort County. This involved moving 20,000 bricks and three truck loads of building parts. The house was again moved to its current site in Moncks Corner on old Highway 52 and fully
restored. The Berkeley Chamber of Commerce is now located in this building. |
