Francis Marion is best known for his Revolutionary escape through the Lowcountry's swampy maze. In addition to being Brigadier
General of the S. C. Militia during the American Revolution, The Swamp Fox was also a tax collector, a member of both the First S. C. Provincial Congress and the Constitutional Convention. He served in the S. C. Senate, was a director of the Santee Canal Co. and a mason. For 3 years of military service, the senate awarded him only their heartfelt thanks and a gold medal. He died childless in 1795 and today rests beneath a granite monument beside his wife. |
