| Mepkin Abbey is a serene and peaceful place where
monks move silently to attend services in the beautiful chapel on the grounds of the old Mepkin Plantation. Originally the home of Henry Laurens, first President of the Continental Congress and signer of the Declaration of Independence, this tranquil place was a working plantation until it was burned by Union troops. Resurrected by William Luce, and his widow, Clare Luce Booth, the property was donated for posterity to the Trappist Order of the Roman Catholic Church for use as a
monastery. The ancient gardens are a marvel at any time of the year, and a walk near the cliffs overlooking the Cooper River affords the visitor a splendid view. Mepkin is open daily. Check in at the Visitors Center and meet the guestmaster before entering the gardens. There is no admission fee. Buses and tour groups are welcome, but should call ahead to ensure access to the grounds. Mepkin Abbey, now operated by the monks, is located approximately eight miles from
Moncks Corner on Highway 44 just off SC Highway 402. | |
