| Biggin Church Ruins SC Highway 402 Location Map Two miles north of Moncks Corner on SC Highway 402, lie the ruins of what may be called the Phoenix of Berkeley County's historic churches. Biggin Church was the Parish Church of St. John's Berkeley, one of 10 parishes established in
1704. In 1712 the church was completed but fell to forest fire in 1755. It was rebuilt and torched by British soldiers in 1781. This time, restoration lasted more than 100 years. A forest fire again claimed the church in 1886.
Biggin Church takes its name from Biggin Hill in Kent, England. When it burned for the final time, local citizens ensured its fate by pilfering the bricks for building other structures . |
