Hiking, Biking, and Camping

Location Map

The Palmetto Trail in Berkeley County has passages that will provide two or three day trail experiences for hikers, bikers, equestrians, and trail campers.  Local passages enable nature lovers, residents, and tourists alike to be a part of the incredible outdoor beauty that makes up Berkeley County! Two passages that are already open are the Lake Moultrie Passage and the Swamp Fox Passage.

Lake Moultrie Passage – Opened in 1995, the Lake Moultrie Passage is a 33 mile hiking trail that wraps around Lake Moultrie from the Trailhead at the Canal Recreation area off Highway 52 north of Moncks Corner to the Redivision Canal at Cross and passing through some of South Carolina's most beautiful vistas.  When completed the Palmetto Trail will extend from McClellanville on the coast to the Foothills Trail in the Upstate.  For more information on the Lake Moultrie Passage contact:

Santee Cooper Land Division
1 Riverwood Drive
Moncks Corner, SC  29461

Swamp Fox Passage – A 42 mile trail under development of which the 27-mile Swamp Fox National Recreation Trail is open. The trail spans 4 distinct ecosystems. The trail is good for hiking, biking, bird watching, nature study, environmental education and photography. The eastern trailhead is located on the left of US Highway 17 just north of Awendaw. The western trailhead is located at the Witherbee Ranger Station in Cordesville. For more information call the Witherbee Ranger Station at (843) 336-3248.

Hiking trails abound in the Francis Marion Forest, a 250,000-acre natural habitat located primarily in Berkeley County.  A variety of habitats within the forest include tidal creeks and marshes, cypress swamps, and pine woods. Over 280 species of migratory and nonmigratory birds inhabit the forest, most notable of which include the American Swallow-tailed Kite, Wild Turkey, and the Red-cockade Woodpecker.  Wildlife includes deer, raccoon, possum, bobcat, alligator, snakes, and the occasional black bear.  Equestrian, walking, biking, and motorcycle trails.  Picnic areas. Camping available. Hunting by permit only.  In addition, RV, camper, and tent camping sites are available around the county, many on the scenic shores of Lake Moultrie.
