French Quarter Creek

Directions
From Moncks Corner follow Hwy. 52 across the Tail Race Bridge, Turn right at the first light onto Hwy. 402 and proceeding for 15.5 miles to the intersection of 402 and Hwy. 41. Once on 41 take the first right onto Cainhoy Road and travel six miles until you come to French Quarter Road on your right. If you cross the bridge, you just missed it! Your boat can be put in just to the right side of the bridge. You will know you have reached the Cooper River when French Quarter Creek forms a large "T" in the river. You may explore the Cooper River by paddling left or right at this point.

Description
At the beginning, the creek is only ten to fifteen feet wide and covered by overhanging trees and brush, resembling the old-time jungle movies. For the first half-mile or so, the creek looks as if it could have been a hand-dug channel, straight and even. Quaint houses and boat docks line the right side of the creek bank, but do not detract from the peaceful solitude.

Nature Guide
You may encounter a number of different wildlife when you paddle on French Quarter Creek. Expect to see Osprey, Ducks, Great Egret, Great Blue Heron, Anhinga, Cormorant,  Alligators, Snakes, and various fish.  You will have the opportunity to see a variety of wildflowers as you paddle one of the most picturesque creeks in our county.

Time
The paddle to the "T' on the Cooper River and back will take three to four hours depending on the tides and your paddling skills. Time your trip with the tide for a great paddle experience.

Hazards
You may encounter wasps, snakes, and strong currents if paddling against the tide.

Skill Level
Suitable for beginners accompanied by intermediates.
