| Directions: From Charleston take the Moncks Corner exit off of I-26. Take a left at the first red light as you enter Moncks Corner. Turn left at your second red light on main & hwy. 6. Travel 8.9 miles until you see the sign on your right for the hatchery. You may paddle to the left or to the right after you launch from the boat
landing. The launch to the left will take you straight out to several islands good for exploring by water. The launch to the right takes you along a canal that also allows for good veiwing of wildlife.
Lake Nature Guide: You may encounter a number of different wildlife when you paddle on the hatchery. Expect to see Osprey, Ducks, Great Egret, Great Blue Heron, Anhinga, Cormorant, Alligators, Snakes, and various fish. In the spring and summer you
can expect to see some of nature's prettiest waterplants such as Yellow Lotus, Fragrant Water-Lilly, and Spatterdocks.
History: The Hatchery is a 2,554 acre area that is part of the Santee Cooper Lakes project started in 1939 to develop electrical power for the Berkeley County area. Even though never developed as a true fish hatchery, this area is a good breeding ground for fish due to its shallow and protected waters that remain warmer than
deeper lake water. This area is also designated as a water fowl management area that results in an abundance of water fowl and birds throughout the year.
Time: A few hours to more than half a day depending on your time schedule.
Hazards: Surmerged stumps, heavy waves during high wind or storms, wasp and snakes if you paddle into trees or brush.
Skill Level:
Suitable for beginners. Best paddling at the Hatchery is when the lake level is between 73.5 feet to full stage which is 75.5. Lower levels will hinder your ability to paddle. Lake level is posted daily in the Post & Courier. | |
