Echaw Creek

Directions
From Charleston, take Hwy. 17 north to McClellanville. Turn left at blinking yellow caution light onto Hwy. 45 (French Santee Road). Drive 12 miles. Turn right onto Price Landing Road (FS Road 151). Go 2.5 miles. Turn right on Pitch Landing Road (FS Road 192). Go 2.5 miles to landing. Echaw creek runs three miles until it enters the Santee River. From the Santee River it is a
6 mile paddle to McConnell's Landing.

History
As you paddle along the creek be sure to look for evidence of the abandoned rice culture.

Description
This small black water creek winds through magnificent oak-hickory stands as well as cypress-tupelo swamps. The abundance of well-drained mature forest on the banks invites exploration on foot.. The right bank when traveling downstream is privately owned. Please do not trespass.

Wildlife
You may encounter an opportunity to view bobcats, owls, and other species of wildlife on this trip.

Camping
You may camp at Elmwood Campground which is located near the intersection of Mill Branch and Echaw Road. You need to pack in; pack out if you camp.

Time
You can expect to spend 5 to 6 hours or more depending on tide conditions and water level.

Hazards
Wasp, venomous snakes, sweepers, summerged trees, crossing log jams, biting insects and high temperatures during warmer months.

Skill Level
Beginners accompanied by intermediates.
