| - Wear your Personal Flotation Device(PFD) whenever you are on the water.
Before making the decision to take children, make certain that you provide the appropriate-sized PFD. - Steer your canoe or kayak away from strainers(trees, logjams,shrubs, & debris). Maintain maximum
clearance from all strainers.
- Stay low when entering or exiting your canoe or kayak.
- Wash your hands with clean water, soap, or alcohol prior to eating to avoid ingestion of harmful bacteria and other contaminants.
- Carry and drink plenty of pure water to prevent dehydration.
- Use plenty of sun block solution
. Reapply after mid-day or after any swim. Always wear a wide brim hat or baseball cap(minimum).
- Wear sunglasses help protect the eyes from glare off the river surfaces. Wear a glasses strap to avoid losing your glasses or sunglasses.
- Tie in all articles in case of an upset.
- Don't take valuable articles along unless they are in a secure
waterproof container. A garbage sack is not a secure waterproof container. Waterproof bags for canoeing and kayaking are generally available from most outdoor sports stores.
- Do not overload your canoe or kayak with gear or people.
- Be prepared for rain. Take rain gear or a poncho for protection.
- In colder weather, do NOT wear anything made from cotton
, such as T-shirts or Blue Jeans. Wear polypropylene, nylon, wool, or other non-cotton materials. Bring a cap.
- Bring a change of clothes in a waterproof bag.
- Be able to identify and be aware of poison-ivy when you are off the river, walking. If you suspect that you have had exposure to poison ivy, immediately wash any exposed skin with soap and water.
