Russellville Flats

Directions
After you cross the Tail Race Bridge in Moncks Corner travel North for 9.5 miles on Hwy. 52 then turn left on Mandella Rd. Follow Mandella Rd. until you reach stop sign .7 miles. Turn right on Hwy. 35 and go 3.5 miles then turn left onto Russell Store Rd. Go 1.3 miles to the boat landing.

Description
At launch you will paddle straight across the diversion canal and then follow the shoreline to your left that leads to the lake. Your paddle will take you through numerous moss-laden cypress trees and your return trip will provide the opportunity to paddle aroundseveral small islands. Be sure to paddle the several dead-end canalsthat offer some great views. Many locals have found arrow heads and pottery from past residents of the land along the shores. The best time to paddle this trip is when the lake is at our near full pool of 75.5 ft.

Wildlife
You will get the chance to see many variety of birds such as ducks, geese, osprey, etc., giant carp frequent the shallow waters, and alligators.

History
The area that now makes up Lake Moultrie was once part of large rice, indigo and cotton plantations. Work was started in 1939 to develop the lake system that now exists to provide power and great recreational opportunities for its many visitors.

Dangers
Summer thunderstorms can be frequent in the late afternoon, as well as high waves produced by storms or high winds. Be aware that motor boat traffic also shares a portion of this section.

Time Your paddle can last from several hours to almost a full day if you choose. The best way to experience this trip is at a slow pace which will allow you to take in all the wildlife, obscure side trips, and soothing rhythm of the water.

Skill level
Beginners accompanied by intermediates. Canoeist need to be aware that during high winds, the lake can make for a very difficult paddle.
